FUCK YOUR RULES!

FUCK YOU WORLD,
LOVE LETTER TO LIFE

“If the play had a world it would be a transvestite one”
Rogério Nuno Costa

A British citizen born in London, studying in Manchester with Glaswegian heritage. Neither belonging to a religion nor a political party. I attempt not to make unwarranted judgements or bias associations based on the stereotypes of my culture. Though I made the promise the reality show, written and directed by Rogério Nuno Costa adapted from José Maria Vieira Mendes Third Age, does not follow the same obligation, in fact it commits to the opposite. It comments on society and all its stereotypes through the various characters who play numerous versions of the same. Having just celebrated its 40th anniversary of freedom from the dictatorship, it is refreshing to see a piece of work that defies the dictatorships of theatre. Though it can be argued that the authenticity of a stage production is lost to this work through its playback elements, the challenge it poses to an established industry is far more interesting. There’s a saying that springs to mind ‘blood, sweat and tears’ which is what an audience expects from our performers. We expect that they will have studied a text to the point of no mistakes, a context to give the piece a firm reality that we can escape our lives for the duration of the performance, and when the performer makes it to the stage we expect a whole hearted performance that we believe.

“I don’t like actors”

Do we feel cheated? Or do we embrace the fact that these silent rules of theatre might be a little outdated. Costa grabs the move of a generation desperate to have a voice and floods them into 1 world built by 3 dimensions. The context of a university production, commenting on the rules and obligations of students in order to get a grade, the reality show depicting the obsession our society has with watching people’s lives on a screen, and finally the clash of these ‘worlds’ that causes the apocalyptic chaos that the audience witness. Exposure to this chaos is heard through the ear piercing muddle of sounds, songs and speech. He has taken the responsibilities of the actors away and purposefully replaced it with badly lip syncing puppets, who mock the foundations of the degree they are studying. With playback carrying such a negative entourage it’s a commendable risk to produce an entire play based upon it. Commendable, yet the verdict to its success is still in procession.

“I wrote the piece for them [students]”

When the process for this ensemble started back in February it would have been near on impossible to contemplate the end result. Hours upon hours were dedicated to the experimentation of ideas both presented by student and teacher, a novelty that left ego at the door and replaced it with a mutual respect. Did the play chase an unachievable goal and lack an interest in the things that matter the most? Or did it open your mind to the possibility that the concepts of theatre the world has, have started changing? Terceira Idade proudly waves a flag screaming for war against the expectations of theatre.

SINOPSE INCOMPLETA

E a única frase é: “Vai haver guerra”. Atores inoperativos, inconsequentes, desequilibrados. É televisão dentro do teatro.” E a Internet, no fim, a dizer: “Bitches, please…”
